Get 'Island Happy' with 'Meet Me On The Island'
Senior Life News (South Bend, Indiana)
, June 2, 2002

The South Bend Regional Museum of Art and 88.1 WVPE will present the first "Meet Me On The Island" of the season from 5-9pm, June 5, featuring live music by Dog Talk, paintings by Lauren Feece and pottery courtesy of Frank Pishur.

In honor of Century Center's 25th Anniversary, June 7 will be an overflow of art and entertainment. The evening will be topped off with fireworks at dusk. In addition to the art on display on Island Park, the SBRMA will keep the galleries and Museum Shop open to the public from 5-7pm for the First Friday. The public is invited to attend the First Friday opening reception, admission is free and refreshments are served. The museum will be ushering in four new exhibitions: "Craft Work Regional: One"; "Stephen Loidolt: Venom:" "tom Torluemke: Bound" and "St. Joe Valley Watercolor Society; Annual Exhibition."

Indianapolis band Dog Talk has no rules to tie them down, but one: to promote music that is fun and positive. Overly dynamic and versatile, Dog Talk thrills audiences of all ages. Michael Beck, founder of the band, plays a variety of ethnic percussion instruments from around the world. Formerly the drummer for Arista recording artists Happy the Man, Michael has collaborated on music for both theatre and dance companies. Guitarist Bill Lancton brings 30 years experience playing funk, jazz, rock and country to the group. Jim Litchfield provides the group's distinctive fretless bass sound, while Cliff White fronts as an unusual and highly entertaining vocalist. Dog Talk rounds things out with sax player, keyboardist and vocalist Kenny Kipp.

MMOI takes place on Island Park, located behind Century Center in downtown South Bend. It can best be described as a "mini summer festival" featuring sculpture by regional artists and live music performed by area musicians. Even more inviting than the entertainment is the location. MMOI takes place on a manmade island, a remnant of the 20th Century industry, along the St. Joseph River.

Tickets may be purchased in advance or at the door. In the instance of disagreeable weather, the event will take place as scheduled inside Century Center. Admission is $5 for non-members, 88.1 WVPE and SBRMA members admitted free. Children under 12 admitted free.
